"Some of you young folks been saying to me
" Hey Pops, what you mean 'What a wonderful world'?

How about all them wars all over the place?
You call them wonderful?
And how about hunger and pollution?
That ain't so wonderful either."

Well how about listening to old Pops for a minute.
Seems to me, it aint the world that's so bad but what we're doin' to it.

And all I'm saying is see what a wonderful world it would be if only we'd give it a chance.
Love baby, love. That's the secret, yeah.
If lots more of us loved each other
we'd solve lots more problems.
And then this world would be a... better!

That's wha' ol' Pops keeps saying."

"What a Wonderful World" [1970 Spoken Introduction Version] along with Oliver Nelson's Orchestra is a song written by Bob Thiele (as George Douglas) and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released as a single in 1968. Thiele and Weiss were both prominent in the music world (Thiele as a producer and Weiss as a composer/performer). Armstrong's recording was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Intended as an antidote for the increasingly racially and politically charged climate of everyday life in the United States, the song also has a hopeful, optimistic tone with regard to the future, with reference to babies being born into the world and having much to look forward to. The song was initially offered to Tony Bennett, who turned it down. Thereafter, it was offered to Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901 -- July 6, 1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, the legendary American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana.

You're deep just like a chasm
You've no, enthusiasm
You're tired and uninspired
You're blasé

Your day is one of leisure
In which you search for pleasure
You're bored when you're adored
You're blasé

While searching for the moon
And stars up in the sky
The simple things of normal life
Are passing you by

You sleep, the sun is shining
You wake, its time for dining
There's nothing new for you to do
You're blasé...

The news has been welcomed by fans and celebrities, with Manilow trending on Twitter and Facebook as many made puns and wondered how their mums were coping.

“So all this time, Barry Manilow was singing about Andy,” one user wrote. “Not quite sure how I’m gonna tell my mum that Barry Manilow is gay,” said another.

Some expressed surprise that Manilow hadn’t come out sooner. Feminist writer Roxane Gay said: “I didn’t realise Barry Manilow was in the closet! But good for him coming out. He’s the best.”

Manilow was briefly married to his high school sweetheart, Susan Deixler, while he was studying at the New York College of Music. The singer has said he was in love with her but was “not ready for marriage”.

Singer says he has been in a relationship with his manager since 1978, but kept it from fans for fear of disappointing them
